On this tour: "on the trail of the sacred Romanian painting" is proposed a visit to the holy places
among the most popular of Romania. The trip will take you to visit several churches and monasteries, many
of which are classified as world heritage by UNESCO but also medieval towns of great cultural importance.
You will start from Bucharest, Romania's capital and then continue with a visit to the town of Curtea de
Arges and its most important attraction, the monastery which so resembles a stone fortress and linked to
one of the oldest and famous Romanian legends, the legend of Master Manole and his construction. On the
way to Sibiu is scheduled stop at Calimanesti in order to visit the famous Cozia monastery dating from
1390 with its exterior and interior frescoes.
The most important city between those built by the Saxons in Sibiu, Romania is the capital of
Transylvania. Interesting its historic centre and medieval walls, features pastel coloured houses
peeking on town squares and alleys typical they do remember a classic German city.
UNESCO considered that Sibiu's old town should be included the world heritage because of the
uniqueness of its architectural beauty and perseverance on the part of city authorities, to preserve
the ancient Saxon traditions. Other interesting locations included in the tour is the city of Alba Iulia
, famous for its walls from 1700 in the shape of a star and the Orthodox Cathedral of unification.
Also this place attracts tourists from all over the world for the uniqueness of its recently restored
architectural beauties. After having visited the first Saxon cities in the region of Maramures, we will
go to the city of Cluj Napoca, an intermediary stage of our trip but not of lesser interest because of
its squares and churches in the central area.
The region of Maramures is known for its wooden churches, and archaic iconographic paintings found within
them, a symbol of Romania, known to the whole world as included in the Unesco World Heritage: Rozavlea,
Barsana and Ieud are some of the most important. Of great interest, in addition to the wooden churches
and monasteries, we will be visiting the cemetery called "merry" from Sapanta whose colors and playful
tone of the lines written on the gravestones make it unique.
From the religious wooden buildings from Maramures we will go to see those made of stone in the neighboring region
of Bukovina was also known for hosting many magnificent monasteries like Moldovita, Voronet, Humor and Voronet have
each a predominant colour and are part of the UNESCO World Heritage site.
Going to the monasteries is an experience that will offer you unspoiled natural landscapes such as flowery
valleys, forests, and meadows that will be pleasant part of the trip, prior to visiting the main objectives
of the stages of our tour.
We will also visit a part of the Romanian Moldavia and one of its main cities: Piatra Neamt.
The trip from Bukovina (from Vama, the village where we will stay during the visit in Bucovina) to the Romanian
Moldova will be the occasion to visit three other monasteries: Neamt, Agapia and Varatec.
Piatra Neamt, which for its position and for its beauty is known as the "Pearl of Moldavia" will
be destination of our trip. Very interesting
is the historical centre made up of the Church of St. John( Sfantul Ion ) and of the Tower of Stephen the great (Stefan cel Mare).
This will be our last stop before reaching Bucharest for the return flight.
A tour which shows Romania under the religious aspect and that will enrich your knowledge about this wonderful country, a
veritable mosaic of peoples, customs and legends, and intermediary between the Slavic and Latin world.
Have a nice trip!
